SEND LOVE FROM THE WILD
WITH OUR VALENTINE’S DAY E-CARDS
Are you or your Valentine animal lovers? Do roses and chocolates feel passé? If so, we have the perfect way for you to show how much you care. Instead of buying another 'thing' that contributes to the depletion of our planet's natural resources, give a gift that helps protect nature. Make a donation to help protect wildlife and we’ll email a Valentine’s Day card with a personal message written by you. Your donation will help protect all of the animals who make our Ukuwela Nature Reserve in South Africa their home, including the beautiful birds (and hyena!) below.
PINK THROATED TWINSPOT
Say how much you care by sending love from this delicate bird with its distinctive guava-pink face and white-spotted belly. It is one of our favourites at our Ukuwela Reserve thanks to its pretty-in-pink markings. In Zulu, it is named umagumejana after a young girl from the Gumede clan who created beautiful fine beadwork. Send this gorgeous beaded bird to your special someone this Valentine’s Day.
AFRICAN PARADISE FLYCATCHER
Your Valentine will be awed by this beautiful bird, the prettiest of the flycatchers adorning our Ukuwela Reserve. In breeding season, the two central feathers of the male’s tail can double in length to attract the ladies. His courtship display includes flashing his bright under parts and long long tail. Flash your tail this Valentine’s Day with the Paradise Flycatcher’s help.
MARICO SUNBIRD
If you’re looking to catch attention then this dazzling, iridescent bird is the one for your loved one this Valentine’s day. Like hummingbirds, sunbirds hover in front of flowers to drink nectar and fuel their flight. It is the male of the species that is wonderfully colored with the female an understated, perhaps frumpy brown and yellow coloring. For this species, it’s all about the handsome males. If your loved one likes sweets and honey, send them a sunbird splash of light and love.
SPOTTED HYENA
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. How could anyone resist this adorable little one? Does your loved one laugh a little maniacally. Or like the female hyena, is your special someone the leader of your pack? Hyenas are also super Moms, boasting strong reproductive success thanks to their protective love, guarding the den and feeding their pups for up to 18 months. The under-appreciated and vilified hyena is a species that needs a lot of extra love. Send a gift to help protect spotted hyena this Valentine’s day.
