HAPPY CRYPTO BIRTHDAY, ETHEREUM!

Today, July 30, 2024, is the ninth anniversary of the official launch of Ethereum! The community-run Ethereum blockchain technology powers the cryptocurrency ether (ETH) and thousands of decentralized applications — as well as supporting wildlife conservation. Learn more in our latest story below.

The Wild Tomorrow elephant reimagined for the web3 era.

Proudly crypto-enabled since 2018, Wild Tomorrow was one of the first wildlife conservation nonprofits to accept cryptocurrency donations. We take dozens of cryptocurrencies, from Aave to Zcash, including Ether, Bitcoin, and even Dogecoin! 

Wild Tomorrow are especially big fans of Ethereum, though, because it’s a relatively green blockchain. Ethereum now uses the proof-of-stake mechanism, which has a far lesser environmental cost than energy-intensive proof-of-work computations. Bitcoin, which uses proof-of-work, consumes 53,000 times more energy than Ethereum each year. 

We also received our first crypto donations in Ether on the Ethereum blockchain. The gift equated to approximately US $25,000 and helped us purchase 25 acres of land for the Greater Ukuwela Nature Reserve back in 2021.

The connection between nature and cryptocurrency was clear to Wendy Hapgood, our co-founder and Chief Operating Officer, whose former career was in international electronic currency sales at Barclays and Citibank. “At Wild Tomorrow,” says Wendy, “We believe that innovative technologies such as blockchain and cryptocurrencies have the potential to connect new audiences to conservation.”
